Containing a package 3 metres high and 1.2 metres wide is not easy, and using a metal strip is practically impossible to do so. Polystyrene, in all its shapes and densities (PS-EPS-PSE-XPS) is a very delicate material and using hard material (the metal strip) on edges will irreparably damage the product as well as affect the corners by losing its clamping effect within a few minutes.
The task is even more difficult if, besides putting the package together, a strip of the same material has to be inserted to keep the package together.
This is possible and easy to do by using stretch film.
Area srl has a series of wrapping machines from 1400 mm to 3200 mm in diameter, which wrap individual packages (standard mm. 600x1200x500 H) as well as complete transport units (usually 5 packages high and 2 width-wise). The constant increase in transport costs combined with the legitimate possibility to optimise loads has led to an increase in height from 5 to 6 packages, therefore up to 3 metres). Ring from 3200 mm (usually the maximum transportable capacity) cannot accept packages of 1200×3200. Therefore a rectangular model (Q350) has been designed to wrap these dimensions with ease.
The option of automatically inserting a strip under the package (which can be done by using an inexpensive type of material since it is the same material as the finished product) makes this solution very appealing.
The transformation of this type of packaging system is evolving rapidly: inserting polystyrene strips under the package and wrapping it with stretch film instead of using metal straps.
